Selena Gomez and Rema, the American pop singer-songwriter and Nigerian Afro-Rave sensation ‘Calm Down’ climbed the charts for 41 consecutive weeks.

Rema & Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down,’ which is up for two other VMA awards for Best Song and Best Collaboration seems to be the front-runner for Best Afrobeats. With a No. 3 Billboard Hot 100 ranking, ‘Calm Down’ has had tremendous crossover success. In its 49th week on the Hot 100, the song drops one spot to No. 6, spending a seventh week atop Radio Songs.

The charm of the song is found in its seductive and ethereal melody, in which Rema tries to convince a young woman of his good intentions at a nearby club.

Even though many songs have a spike in popularity because of cultural events, these songs frequently fade when the event passes. Though ‘Calm Down’ is not connected to a particular cultural moment like other Afrobeat songs, Kyle Denis of Billboard claims that it is nevertheless becoming increasingly popular.
