Review: ‘Khufiya’ Leaves Empty Spaces, doesn’t Come up to Expectations

Vishal Bharadwaj’s Khufiya, which stars Tabu in the main lead, released today, but it isn’t really as fascinating as it seemed to be by its trailer. It didn’t really live up to the mark and had holes in between which were left as is, without further explanation, which made it feel that there should’ve been more depth to the plot and its characters.

The film is set in 2004, and starts with Heena, who’s an agent of Krishna Mehra (Tabu) getting murdered in a party in Dhaka. Later it turns out that she was sent on a mission and someone from their office betrayed them. The fingers are all pointed towards Ravi Mohan (Ali Fazal), who is actually delivering India’s top secrets to the neighbouring country, and his wife has a role in it too. And Krishna Mehra is sent to catch the one who’s controlling Ravi Mehra. The story then takes turns and ends in a somewhat humorous way.

Tabu plays the character of a workaholic woman with an ex-husband and a 19 year old son, and Ali Fazal, on the other hand is a strange kind of a patriot. The music and direction of the film is well in place and the dialogues are amazing with a bit of Shakespeare references in them, like his plays and characters.

Overall, the movie’s first part kept me hooked, but the other one was as gripping. Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, produced by Vishal Bharadwaj and Rekha Bhardwaj, it also casts Wamiqa Gabbi, Azmeri Haque Badhon, Ashish Vidyarthi Viraj Surve, and is worth a one time watch.
