For the first time in 23 years, Manipur will celebrate its independence with the screening of Vicky Kaushal’s film Uri: The Surgical Strike.

On India’s 77th Independence Day at Churachandpur, cinema was once again brought to the region of agony Manipur, after over two decades.

Many people showed up to see the movie in Rengkai (Lamka). In 1998, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” was the last Bollywood movie to be shown in Manipur.

The Hmar Students Association (HSA) staged the screening to protest “The Revolutionary People’s Front,” the political arm of the banned People’s Liberation Army, a terror organisation with Meitei roots that banned Hindi films in September 2000.
