The third season of Netflix’s Locke & Key will be the series’ final season. Fans of the supernatural thriller based on the IDW comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodrguez need not worry; Season 3 was designed as the show’s final chapter, so they will get a decent finish. In fact, I’ve heard that Netflix approached Locke & Key’s creative team with a concept for a three-season run consisting of a 10-episode second season and an eight-episode third season, following the ten-episode first season’s breakout success. That matched executive producers/co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill’s concept for how to tell the tale and when to finish it up on Locke & Key.
“We felt three seasons was the appropriate amount to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying finish once we began working on the series,” Cuse and Averill said in a statement. “As storytellers, we are grateful that we were able to share Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s extraordinary story in the way that we desired. The mystical keys, on the other hand, will be kept for our own personal use.”
Apart from jokingly disclosing themselves as the true Keepers of the Keys, Cuse and Averill are presently finalising post-production on the final eight episodes, which Netflix has yet to schedule but will be published later this year.
The first episode of Locke & Key aired in February 2020. In March 2020, it was confirmed that Season 2 would be renewed. Season 3 was announced in December of that year, with the two seasons filming in Toronto back-to-back. In October of 2021, Season 2 was released.
The Locke siblings are followed by the supernatural drama when their father is slain in unexplained circumstances. The three siblings and their mother move into Keyhouse, their family’s ancient mansion, where they uncover a cache of magical keys linked to their father’s death. A sinister demon awakens as the Locke children investigate the many keys and their distinct powers, and will stop at nothing to steal them.
Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Brendan Hines, Sherri Saum, Kevin Durand, and Coby Bird star in Season 3 of Locke and Key.
The show’s co-showrunners are Cuse and Averill, who work for IDW Entertainment. They executive produce Season 3 with Take 5’s John Weber, Whizbang Films’ Frank Siracusa, IDW’s Kevin Lafferty, Joe Hill, Ted Adams, Chris Ryall, and Lydia Antonini, and Circle of Confusion’s Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, David Alpert, and Rick Jacobs.
